"Danse Macabre" started out as a song for voice and piano. Saint-Saens later orchestrated it and also expanded the piece into the well-known orchestral tone-poem. Anthony Roden sings the tenor-and-orchestra version, with the London Philharmonic conducted by Geoffrey Simon (from a 'Cala' CD).

"Zig-a-zig-a-zig - Death is tapping the tomb with his heel at midnight, playing an air on his out-of-tune fiddle ... White skeletons dart through the shadows ... What a hullaboo ... Zig-a-zig-a-zig" (etc.)

  • Quel massacre. Diction déplorable, tempi bien trop lents et surtout quelle fin complètement trafiquée ! Dommage pour l'orchestre qui a une très belle couleur (cela dit, rien de surprenant quand on a une merveille comme le London Philharmonic). Really, shame on the "singer".

  • I LOVE THIS PIECE, I just heard the orchestral version on Met Opera radio It's perfect that you just uploaded this in the tenor voice! THANK YOU!
