As far as I know, building up the multiplier will give you a lot more points. I suggest going for the bonus in the corner once at the start (if you can do it quickly), then keep the chain going after that (unless you need to destroy a bomb, in which case it's minimal loss if you do it right after the multiplier increases).

Oh, also, this game's RNG seems to be fixed so that it's always possible to keep the chain going after clearing any gems. This can be abused.
