This lamentable performance from Johann Lamont, with its laboured scripted one-liners and prepared insults, demonstrates why Labour is unfit to govern Scotland, and indeed has been for a very long time. She has learned nothing from the disastrous mistakes of her predecessor, Iain Gray, and seems locked in the same style and script.

The contrast with the First Minister's responses is painful. Alex Salmond delivers a master class in the economics of dependence on the UK versus the freedom from constraints that would come with independence, which would deliver the economic tools to liberate Scots from the economic stagnation and now near-collapse that Labour and now the Coalition have wreaked upon the UK.

The inherent contradictions built in to the dependency relationship between Scottish Labour, UK Labour and the Tory-led Coalition are evident every time Johann Lamont opens her mouth.

The Scottish people have recognised this in the May 2011 election, Scottish trades union members clearly must have recognised it also. UK trades union leaders are facing up to it, with some of the most damning indictments ever delivered by trade union barons against a Labour Party Leader and a Labour Opposition, the voters of England recognise it.

But as yet, Scottish trades union leader cannot find the courage to speak up for their members, for severing the political link with Labour, for ending the political levy, and most of all, for throwing their weight behind the independence of their country.

  • What angers me, is that all Scottish Labour can come up with is that independance is bad and even the mention of it causes near enough pure hatred. They will not even entertain quality debate on this matter. Douglas Alexander on Question Time was nothing more than shocking in the way he treated Nicola Sturgeon along with Dimbleby. I feel the tone and manner used by Lamont is confrontational and not in the professional manner given by AS.

  • @arthurdailey2009 We can certainly agrre on that ...

  • For info, Johann Lamont is married to Archie Graham, the Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council and Labour councillor for Langside ward...........just a wee bit too cosy there, conflict of interest or Monkland's mafia mark 2?

  • @arthurdailey2009 I don't like than line - judging people by who their spouses are smacks of McCarthyism and worse, and there's is no end to it. If we look at every married couple in the media and politics, we can find similar relationships. Your approach is alien to my view of politics, and doesn't serve the cause of independence well.

  • Typical bully - boy Labour tactics, however the Scottish people have become fed up with the Labour Party in Scotland and will not listent to their nonsense. The May 2011 results showed that Scotland want a new direction and fresh thinking instead of being forced to accept Labour's usual drivel that we are expected to accept by stelf.

Scottish Labour are a corrupt bunch only interested in their own and party gain.

  • @arthurdailey2009 I don't believe that's true of all Scottish Labour, and I don't think it's true of Johann Lamont. But they are locked in a moral dilemma because of their support for the UK, nuclear weapons and war. Your description probably fits most who took the high road to Westminster..

If we are to achieve independence, we must shift the good, honest Labour politicans and supporters - and they are in the majority - to independence and a YES vote. Abusing them won't do it

  • @arthurdailey2009 It's not hard to understand why - most of these people in Scottish Labour/Tory and Lib dems are 3rd rate at best. The prospect of the gravy train derailing is an attack to thier very core. That alone explains the hatred.

Watch and see - if the polls swing towards public support for independence watch these 3rd raters leap like lemmings to join the SNP in an attempt to save their incomes...

  • Are we to believe that Johann Lamont if say labour won the next election would be seen and taken seriously as a leader of this country? In my opinion God forbid! Like many who comment on this video I cant take her seriously and cringe when she opens her inarticulate mouth. Do any serious intelligent Scots really want a marxist 1970's style, left wing feminist blithering idiot as First Minister? She's right out of the Harriet Harman School of blame someone else especially men. She's a Tumshie!

  • My god, sounds like someone as idiotic as Wendy Alexander. Is it really that difficult to understand that the SNP are doing the very best they can with the tools available to them? The fact that Labour in Wales is in agreement just shows how hypocritical the Labour party are! Get stuck in Uncle Alex!

  • seen as credible, well they need to be progressive, and actually use the Scottish title they use in their name in a practicle sense. Scottish policies, Scottish interests and a genuine enthusiasm to support Scotland, not the interests of parties based in a building over 500 miles away.
