This video was taken Jun. 13, 2010 around 10:20am. After sending pics and this video to various news stations, I've learned this is a cold-air funnel. It's somewhat hard to see but at the bottom of the funnel, the clouds were rotating around like in a tornado. Possibly the weirdest thing I have seen, especially since it was a chilly day in Leadville! As far as I know, nobody has seen anything like this in Leadville before, so this was a rare and special occurrence!

  • great job! cold air funnels are fun to film!

  • @StormChaserNick Thanks! It was really cool to see up here! Definitely not something we see every day :)

  • @Derail07 That may be so, but we've never seen anything like that up here in Leadville before as far as I know. So actually, it is WIN. This is the first real funnel cloud I've ever seen, probably because I've lived up here at 10,200 feet all of my life.

  • Worlds highest tornado? The news article that linked me here said that they had observed tornadoes as high as 12,000 feet in the past, but Mt. Massive is a 14'er.

  • @Epotheros From what I understand it's not actually a tornado because the funnel never touched down. It was just a cold-air funnel. That doesn't change how rare it is for this location. We've never seen anything like that here before (at least the locals I've talked to haven't). I guess cold-air funnels are more common on the coast.

  • @kevinrobertgoing its always like that

  • @swift562

    depth perception?

  • thats a beautiful tornado. its amazing how calm everything is around it

  • that piece of shit shit "cold air funnel" fucked up my rav4 with a god damn corrugated steel roof!

  • Cold weather funnels are somewhat common here in Montana. But they're still pretty freaky. I've seen one before, about two miles north of my house.

  • amazing that a funnel would happen at 11,000 ft give or take. I like the blue sky and it looks like fresh snow in the back ground

  • @Derail07 ummm you obviously haven't been here. I've done a history video of the town and from what I know this has never happened.

Thanks for sharing! Glad someone was able to catch this on video -

  • cool
