The Labor Day holiday provided a great setting for Remington Parks 20th Birthday Party and for Brownie Points to win the tracks richest turf race of the season, the $148,500 Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Breeders Cup Handicap.

Remington Park celebrated 20-years of horse racing on Labor Day. The track opened for the first time on Sept. 1, 1988. Fans were treated to many festivities and drawings for cash and prizes worth well over $20,000 throughout the racing program.

A talented 5-year-old mare, Brownie Points tracked the early leaders for the first six furlongs of the 1-1/8 miles event before beginning her serious run over the final three furlongs. Despite slow fractions set by Tricky Causeway of :25.17 for the opening quarter-mile, :50.06 for the half-mile and 1:14.99 for three-quarters, Brownie Points was able to muster enough power under Luis Quinonez to run down the early leader in the stretch to win by a length.

She was third, three or four lengths back but they were going so slow," said Brownie Points trainer Donnie Von Hemel. "Going 25-seconds for a quarter-mile on that turf course right now is slow. You know when you get to those horses that theyre going to have a lot of kick left and they did. Luckily she had a little more.

The final winning time was 1:50.37 over the firm going.

Owned by Josephine Abercrombies Pin Oak Stable of Versailles, Ky., Brownie Points became just the second female to win the DeBartolo in the 12-runnings of the race. Bien Nicole was the other, winning the 2002 edition, also trained by Von Hemel.

The heavy wagering favorite at 4-5 odds, Brownie Points paid $3.80 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Tricky Causeway held onto the second position to pay $7.40 to place and $5.20 to show. Brego, the winner of the DeBartolo last year, was third and paid $6.20 to show.

Bred in Kentucky by Pin Oak Stud, Brownie Points won her ninth career race from 24 attempts and her fourth race overall at Remington Park. A daughter of Forest Wildcat from the Forty Niner mare Stylish Society, Brownie Points earned $90,000 for winning the DeBartolo, pushing her overall bankroll to $928,942.

The win on Brownie Points was the second in the DeBartolo for Quinonez. He rode Doctor Trotter to victory in the very first DeBartolo in 1997.

Von Hemel has now won three editions of the DeBartolo. In addition to the two mares he saddled to victory, he also triumphed with Best of KC in 2001.

Pin Oak Stable won the DeBartolo for the first time. The race is named after the founder of Remington Park who passed away in 1994.
