Royal Hudson climbing steep grade

The Royal Hudson locomotive #2860 climbing a hill in Surrey BC, near Scott road. I have heard this is around a 3% grade, which makes it a very steep grade. The usual is about 2.2%.
The Hudson has a diesel helper unit behind it, and they are both straining.

This is Old Yale Road (108th Ave). I was waiting up at 99th and Scott for her to come through. Wow!! I've never heard her sound that loud before!!

Its also not a 3% grade, its 4%, the line being originaly built for Electric Traction Engines (Trams and Inter-Urbans) not Diesels and certainly not for Steam Engines.

ralph, its not traction that is a problem nor steam, 3percent is a very steep grade for any train to pull. I live right by there and watch SRY strugle with 3 or 4 units and a ten car train. never mind a 1940s steam loco and an old f unit, as for the engineer blowing the wistle, well in canada and most of the world they do that at grade crossings to warn vehicles

Maybe if the driver hadn't blown away all the steam with the horn, he wouldn't have had so much trouble getting up the hiil.

Good to see someone got this one. I have my video as it crossed Nordel way. On the trip on May 3rd there were two diesel helpers. Southern Rail #124 was added.
