The Chinese teams will face a formidable challenge at the upcoming world championships, Oct. 7-16 in Tokyo, team manager Ye Zhennan said.
The Chinese men will be represented by Olympic champions Chen Yibing and Teng Haibin, world champions Feng Zhe and Zhang Chenglong, and Lu Bo and Guo Weiyang. World and Olympic champion Zou Kai is the alternate.
Olympic champions Jiang Yuyuan and He Kexin headline the women's team, along with Sui Lu, Tan Sixin, Wu Liufang and Yao Jinnan. Huang Qiushuang is the alternate.
China's depth allowed it to ground world champions Zhang Hongtao (pommel horse), Yan Mingyong (still rings), Wang Guanyin (parallel bars), and Deng Linlin (balance beam).
China was the most successful nation at the 2010 Worlds in Rotterdam. The Chinese men won half the gold medals, but barely held off Japan to win the team title.
"Compared with last year's world championships, this year should be a much more severe situation," Ye said.
The team lacks strong all-arounders, he noted. In contrast, Japan has several gymnasts able to score above 91 points, including two-time world all-around champion Kohei Uchimura.
"Plus they are the hosts, so for China it is indeed a challenge," he said.
The Chinese women won the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but fell to third behind Russia and the U.S. in the Rotterdam team final. The team could win or even finish off the podium due to the strength of Russia, U.S. and Romania, he said.
"We do have some advantages on certain events, but that's based on the on-site performance," Ye said. "As long as we prepare whatever we can prepare, adjust the condition of the gymnasts, and do what we can do at the competition, we will be able to get the golds that we deserve."
