A cruise down the GUC in September. Day 6 sees us go from Cowroast Lock down to Hemel Hempstead and start back on our way to base.

We come across a narrowboat adrift from its moorings, an incredibly tame heron that stays lock side a few feet from people for several minutes, and wind the 58' boat round in a small space before donning the flashing blue light to follow a speeding boat ;-)

Finally see what happens when you get a TENT wrapped around your propeller just as you are entering a lock so can no longer slow your boat down!!!!!!

  • I regularly go walking down the Grand Union, out to Winkwell and up Little Hay, brilliant scenery up there.

  • @j0andc0 yes a relaxing cruise too

  • Not very friendly of your companion boat to go down lock 57 without waiting for you?

  • there was a boat already in the lock - so it was either let that go down single or split and see if another boat follows.

  • great video! canal life on speed! I dont suppose you can do one on a week on the norfolk broads condensed into a 2 minute epic can you?

    thanks! good luck and health!

  • Not been afloat on the broads since I was a kid - a long time ago. Maybe one day I'll make it back :-D

  • Is there any time lapse footage like this for the stretch south of Hemel down to where the Grand Union Canal joins the Thames at Brentford and Kew, and then going up the Thames as far as about Hambleden/Medmenham? I was on a boat that did this journey as a 10-year-old with my Dad and sister in summer 1975, stopping off at various pubs, Syon Park, Hampton Court, Windsor Castle, etc. and mooring for the night on a couple of islands (1 had cows on), and would love to see the route again like this!

  • We are off to the Grand Canal next week. We pick up our boat in Leighton Buzzard. Would you recommend we go north or south? I really like open vistas, but also want to explore maybe 1 or 2 villages and enjoy a good pub or two. We are just doing a short break. Thanks for your response!

  • A Normal Man Running by Philip Glass, the bit at the end is actually Fairyland by asdfjkl; (aka homekeys)

  • What is the music?
