I've seen centipides 11-12 inches in Hawaii, but this is still one of the bigger ones I've seen in my life. This is a giant scolopendra that got really worked up after a lot of playing around - and way too much dropping on the concrete. Eventually I even picked up the giant beast centipede and let him crawl on me. It's impossible to get away without doing anything with all these guys I was with.
Big centipede bites are dangerous because some people are allergic to them. So, in addition to burning (searing) pain and massive swelling after a bite you might also start to lose your breath and have other scary, life threatening symptoms.
Scolopendra can kill small mice to eat, as well as snakes and lizards. They are seriously sick fauna.
I don't see these centipedes much in Thailand. They love muddy, wet, warm areas - which pretty much means all of Thailand. Centipedes are often found in the bottom of whiskey bottles from Asia.
Supposedly these grow only to 20cm, they look just like the ones in Hawaii though. If you're on Maui and walking down on the sidewalk along the beach road in Honokowai as it's turning dark... using a flashlight see if you can spot some big centipedes that are a foot long. They are there - I've seen them, and they make a 20 cm centipede look like a maggot.
Centipedes of all sorts are mobile when it's raining - they try to get to dry ground until the rain stops. That means they frequently find their way into your house during rains. Be careful.
If you are bitten you will likely need a tetanus shot and some pain meds. The pain can be excruciating, but nothing like a box Jellyfish sting (I know).
Aren't they poisonous?

@TheMarjolein87 If they sting you - then you'll DEFINITELY know it. They are venomous, yes... this one had the pincers removed.
