This clip presents a moot exercise by Brunel Law Society. It is not an official product of Brunel University. The presentation, which is not in its entirety, contains both good and bad practices in advocacy. It is for this reason that I believe the clip to be a stimulating teaching aid because people learn better by knowing what is good and bad practice.

This moot exercise can be used as a teaching aid in different ways, however it would really suit a situation where teaching takes place as a discussion exercise entailing a close scrutiny of the four speakers. It would be better to focus on pros and cons of:

What these speakers say;
How they articulate their arguments;
Their non-verbal communications;
Their reactions to Judge's probing questions, etc.

This needs to be done bearing in mind two things: elegance and emotional intelligence - the two factors I believe to be major contributors to winning actual cases in courts.

It is well known that one of the major roles that distinguishes the Bar from other professions is advocacy. Also, research has shown that, for some people, fear of speaking in public comes even before fear of death. So, not everyone is suited to advocacy and talents in this area will be a make-or-break factor in a career at the Bar.

To be a successful Barrister, one needs to love public speaking and be able to improvise. These skills, like any other, can be learned. However, for most people advocacy skills come only with intense training. This video can be used as an aid to stimulating discussions on good and bad practice in advocacy. I hope you find it helpful.
