More drumming at http://www.joecrabtree.com

Here's a little half time shuffle groove with a slightly tricky bass drum pattern. Something like this featured on Simon Phillips's album Force Majeure.

Leave a comment to let me know how you get on.

  • Nice ! very similar to Stewart Copeland's playing ! particularly on Walking on the Moon .

  • @Panwhacker01 Yeah. There's a really cool thing in Walking on the Moon that he doesn't actually play - it's a combination of what he plays and the delay. I remember figuring it out when I covered it once. It was hard to play. I think I might do a lesson on that soon!

  • Not too sound cocky but I got it my first just from hearing the groove. I grew up in the black church and this similar to a typical gospel groove, just faster. At this pace, drummers usually play quarters on the hi hats, which is easier.

  • @TIMMYDEEZ nice one :) I realised later that I played too many bass drums. Try missing out the kick that comes on the '4'. Basically just chopping off the first one from the series at the end.

  • ROSANNA ROSANNA. lol

  • Reminds me a little of the Rosanna shuffle from Jeff Pocaro. This has a different bass pattern and less ghosting of the triplet on the snare. Nice one!

  • Interesting ! I always thought that it was a combination of what he played and delay until recently I saw it written out somewhere ! Maybe they were scoring the whole effect ! I am aware he used a rack of effects live which he switched on and off with his foot I believe , I also attempted to cover this when I was about 20 with little success , was to advanced for me at that time ! I love the combination of the 2 drop reggae thing and rim clicks etc .

Thanks (-8: Keep up the good work

  • Could u break down the groove from the yellow jackets album (blue hats) song (capetown)

  • thanks so much can you do more like this one with music written down? i'm self taught so it helps me massively:)

  • @pfefftube

I'm sure he means that at 1:40 ( when you can see the transcription ) the 2nd bass drum hit must be on beat 3 and the 3rd ( bass drum hit ) on the third triplet of beat 3 ( sorry for my english )
