Descend to the bottom in at least 2.4m of water; remove and place on the bottom mask, snorkel and scuba unit. Shut off air, swim 7.6m horizontally while exhaling; ascend exhaling; rest briefly; dive; swim 7.6m horizontally; recover and don the equipment; ascend breathing normally; recover and don the equipment; ascend breathing normally. The total exercise is to be completed with al equipment in place within five minutes.
You are not supposed to hold your breath. Although he may be exhaling while swimming horizontally and then continuing while surfacing this exercise seems ridiculous!!!

I'm doing my DM training right now.
I believe that this skill has no real world scenario outlook in it. Just the same as a scuba bail out (why you would need to sink to the bottom is beyond me)
But it does help you learn to get real familiar with your gear, and re-emphasizes the need to stay calm and control your breathing, and exhaling for that matter.
Also for the weight belt I have a feeling this guy is new or misinformed and probably never trimmed it.

@g1138Cypher, this exercise looks pointless to me. except perhaps as a confidence building one for a Rescue Diver or a DM in training. I am an instructor with several agencies for the past 20 years. I teach BCD R&R underwater as a self rescue skill for entanglement. But removing the BCD and regulator turning off the tank then purging the reg underwater and swimming the length of a pool while breath holding on compressed air seems absurd. Why is he wearing such a long weight belt?

This isn't the best example of a D&R in my opinion. Turning the tank off is a little pointless, and purging the reg underwater w/o air from the tank is a no no.
Not exhaling once the reg is out of your mouth is the cardinal sin of scuba diving.

@andygray
If your tank ever gets caught on something, say stray fishing line and wraps your first stage around a rock.
Kelp could do the trick to. You won't believe what panic can do to a diver. It's just a training drill for the worst of situations.

What exactly is the purpose of this demo? Looks not only dangerous,breathing compressed air then surfacing, but pointless. What scuba diving situation would you ever come across in real lfe recreational diving that demanded that type of skill?

awesome! I want to learn scuba by watching this vid!
