Recorded June 20, 2007.

Skagway is a first-class borough in Alaska, on the Alaska Panhandle. It was formerly a city first incorporated in 1900 that was re-incorporated as a borough on June 25, 2007. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city was 862. However, the population doubles in the summer tourist season in order to deal with more than 900,000 visitors. The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the business of Skagway. The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months. Skagway is also part of the setting for Jack London's book The Call of the Wild.

This video begins in downtown Skagway along Broadway Avenue. Here I take a look at the Golden North Hotel and other historic buildings in town. Also in the video is a glimpse of the White Pass & Yukon Railway. A journey I took back in 1994 on my first trip to Alaska, but not today. The video concludes on the Sapphire Princess as we sail away down the Lynn Canal.

  • @0711geerdes $225 for rent thats cheap an it sounds like you had a lot of fun out there. im thinking of heading out there on vacation some time in 2013 hopefully the hotels aren't expensive.

  • i miss these mountains.

  • @op10004 cost of living is high. I lived in Skagway in 2006 for a summer. It is SOOO worth it. I paid 225 for rent... and shared a house with about 6 other people.... Hard to find a place to live if you don't do it early. Everything is a bit more expensive... but such a good time to get to know people and the weather is gorgeous.... along with the scenery... okay.. so when i was there... it rained... ALOT but it was so gorgeous.. and you can't leet the rain stop yah from doing anything...

  • looks like alaska meets old nevada...not bad

  • i been here too. Great !

  • alaska is beautiful. but how is the cost of living out there? also what kind of jobs are available?

  • I moved here in May, a few days after the first ships arrived. I have to say, after living in Arkansas for almost 28 years, this is def a change for me ! From what I can see, the town hasn't changed much since this video was taken. For being such a small town, there is alot to do . It does take some getting use to all the tourist in town.

  • I always wanted to move here when I lived in Juneau.

  • Skagway is pretty, but it is a bit commercialized for me. That being said I did go on the helicopter flight to the glacier. However,I also spent two nights in the little town of Dyea outside of Skagway. it was much more quite out there and a lot of history too.

  • We enjoyed our time in Skagway. We rode the White Pass train trip and enjoyed Ravens Brew Coffee at the Depot. We got to spend a little time shopping in town before disembarking for our next port. Would have loved to spend more time there. Great video would love to do a helicopter tour. Maybe next time.
