A July 15, 2007 television news piece on the success of a youtube video called "Discover Kauai."

The short film sparked local controversy on the Hawaiian island of Kauai by speaking what is unspeakable in a society dependent on the tourism dollar: that there are serious flaws in this island paradise, most notably runaway development.

Paving over Paradise is, in fact, BAD for not only for tourism, but for everyone who lives on Kauai -- for Native Hawaiians, for long-time residents, and for recent transplants from North America and beyond.

  • Natures only purpose is to serve man we have close to 7 billion souls on the planet. Earth feeds them well and 5 billion more mouths to feed by 2100. An economy that refuses to pave over the land is an economy that losses. It is called Growth it is called GNP and it is a function of forest and farm land being bull dozed and paved for mega malls , McMansions , Athletic Fields , Car Dealerships. and hundreds of thousands of miles of new road. LOL

  • No aloha spirit. Go home

  • Wow, This is 4 years old!

Why would semi-native Hawaiians mess with tourists, cause they didn't buy their fruit and the tourist bitched about the natives being greedy?

No way, the tourists -what ever race he was- is irrelevant, he probably had a "I'm superior" attitude and wasn't logical enough to argue with an un friendly hawaiian.... That's sad. He came all that way to make a enemy when he should of made a friend. Peace Hawaiian brothers, I hope to join you as family when I move there.

  • An Island is ether growing or dieing I lived on Kauai Hawaii for more then six years and I still believe sticking your head in the sand and saying not in my back yard will not work. the people will still come and build only now you will have no say. An place is ether growing or dieing. which one do you choice?

  • Its always the white man that is hurting everyone.Try looking at your own kind and you might see the sell outs of your own people. The blacks in Africa had black slave drivers making money..Every color or nationality has their bad ones but it isn't a white man who is all at fault.

I do respect the desire to keep the island beautiful but calling others white man , n-word or haole whatever that really means is showing total ignorance , find a better way if you really care.

  • I wonder if Ms Koohan Paik was born on Kauai or came from Korea? It seems ironic that she wants to protect the island from outside development when she has moved there and is living there and contributing every dat to the pollution and traffic. I've visited Kauai and it's a wonderful place, I think we should leave it in the care of the native peoples and arrogant Haole who want to move there but keep everybody else out should hold silent.

  • It is beautiful for now, but if development continues of those million dollar plus homes and condos it won't stay beautiful long. I agree with the original video -- it needs to be stopped or slowed down.

We've been there to vacation and it's obvious that the locals are suffering the consequences of the tourist industry. Who is getting rich of this? Not the locals I bet. I'd be angry too.

  • We need to start just ignoring the nonsense haoles disseminate throughout our lives. Just ignore them and move towards the betterment of our families, lands, Kupuna, and souls. no need extended debates about whether tourist are good for us. Their not. Just ignore them and try to find ways to full fill our kuleana and responsibilities to our lands and Kupuna. Eventually haole arrogance will get whats coming to it. In the mean time...find ways to not replicate their colonial mentalities.

  • How dumb can you get? Kauai depends on tourism now that the sugar plantation has closed down. FYI, HAOLE = Foreigner. So, unless you full blooded hawaiian you're haole too. I suggest some economic classes before trying to put your two cents into Hawaiian politics. Its not the tourists you should get mad at, its your government. The people you voted for that are turning a blind eye to make some money. Where you think the money to clean up Polihale after the land slide came from? Educate yourself.

  • Thats a pity. I mean the island is so beautiful with a lot of nature. Everybody who has the privilege to live there should be very thankful and appreciate it.
