When choosing a supplement, it is important to consider quality. The fist step in doing this is to ask if a supplement has been manufactured in a registered GMP facility. If so, you can be assured that FDA approved procedures are in place and the quality control of the supplements they make helps to ensure supplement safety. We all want the best we can get, and when it comes to supplement safety, GMP facilities can make a great deal of difference. A good supplement manufacturer will perform laboratory analysis on each and every run of product they produce, ensuring that there are no harmful pathogens present. This is especially important in the manufacturing of liquid supplements. Liquids provide a much higher level of absorption potential but can also carry the potential of water pathogens. This is why in GMP facilities; all liquid supplements must have preservatives as well as be tested for pathogens before being released for sale and consumption. Supplement safety is the responsibility of the industry and the FDA has taken steps to register manufacturers and to ensure quality control of supplement manufacturing. The market is filled with thousands of supplement brands, many of them are very effective. Sadly, however, many are not. Some things to look for are how the products are made. Are they manufactured in registered GMP facilities? GMP is the standard that the FDA has helped to set up to ensure that dietary supplements are being manufactured with the proper quality control measures. GMP facilities take many extra and costly steps to ensure the potency, integrity, and quality of the products they make. Many people are under the false impression that the FDA approves of dietary supplements, calling our offices and asking is such and such a product is FDA approved. The FDA does not approve of any dietary supplements. There are no supplements made by anyone that are FDA approved. The FDA has helped to set up the GMP standards and registers manufacturing facilities if they meet those standards. These facilities are then routinely inspected and the records reviewed. In order to keep the GMP registration, facilities must undergo regular inspections of all areas of their business. Here at The Institute we work only with GMP registered facilities. The other factor that can affect the absorption of nutrients is the delivery system. Capsules and liquids tend to provide the best way of taking supplements, especially for those over the age of 40 years. As we grow older, we tend to have greater difficulty to break down and to absorb nutrients to the acid/alkaline balance of our digestive system. Capsules and liquids tend to break down faster and more completely, allowing for greater absorption into the bloodstream and hence to the cellular level of the body. Memory loss can not only be frustrating, but can be frightening as well. Memory loss usually starts with what is called the short term memory, such as forgetting someones name, a phone number, etc. This is caused by a complex series of chemical exchanges within the brain. Many factors such as stress, aging, chronic disease, and chemical imbalances in the brain can increase short term memory problems. Nutritional science has been able to identify many of these key brain chemicals involved in short term memory. Nutrients for improving short term memory are best used in combination with each other as the supplements are much more powerful in combination that when used alone. Memory loss can be frightening but in most cases it does not signal more serious memory problems such as Alzheimers.
