Gonorrhea PSA

The Basics
•Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease
•It is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
oThis bacterium grows and multiplies easily in the worm, moist areas of the reproductive tract as well as in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus
•The CDC estimates that there are more than 700,000 new cases of gonorrhea in the U.S. each year
•Gonorrhea is spread through contact with the penis, vagina, mouth or anus
•The highest reported rates of infection are among sexually active teenagers, young adults, the poor, drug users, and African Americans

Signs and Symptoms
•Men
oSome men have no symptoms while others have symptoms that appear two to five days after infection
oA burning sensation while urinating
oA white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis
oPainful or swollen testicles
oInfection or inflammation of the prostate
•Women
oMost women who have gonorrhea have no symptoms and if they do they are often mild
oPainful or burning sensation while urinating
oIncreased vaginal discharge
oVaginal bleeding in between periods

Complications
•If left untreated, gonorrhea can cause major health problems for both men and women
•In women, gonorrhea is a common cause of pelvic inflammatory disease, which could cause infertility and increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy
•In men, gonorrhea can cause epididymitis, a painful condition of the ducts attached to the testicles that may lead to infertility if left untreated
•In both men and women gonorrhea can make it more easy for people to contract HIV

Treatment and Prevention
•Several antibiotics can successfully cure gonorrhea in teenagers and adults although recently there has been an increased resistance of gonorrhea to these antibiotics
•Condoms can be used to reduce the risk of transmission of gonorrhea

i read that if you catch gonorreha, it's best to drink TONS of water so that your urine is clear. this prevents pain on urination until you are able to get treated. this DOESN'T take the place of treatment, however.
