Madama Ganna Walska, a well-known Polish opera singer and socialite, purchased the Santa Barbara property in 1941 and spent the next 43 years of her life designing unusual display gardens with exotic plants. She experimented freely with bold forms and unusual color combinations, contrasting serene, traditional vistas with daring theatrical displays. She described herself as "an enemy of the ordinary".
