I filmed this interview of Andy Irons just 2 weeks before he died of dengue fever on 2nd November 2010. The 3 times world surfing champion talks about life back on Tour, his brother and world title intentions.
I grew up surfng in the 70s and mostly in the 80s in San Diego Calif...alot of the guys I surfed with got hooked on something, a couple died, others simply burned out and turned into drunks....one caught melanoma and another ended up homeless hawking his surf stuff.....if we could all make a living doing what we love we wouldnt have so many drug problems and deaths...life burns you out when your doing something for someone else in the name of a buck.
One of the most painful things in life is trying to understand why great people are taken away so soon. But the legacy born from their passing is what prompts us to look at ourselves and our lives in a totally different way, and to appreciate the magnitude of their example. We are blessed to have people like Andy Irons in our world. Andy Irons lived a great and beautiful life. Anyone who knew him was transcended as a surfer, but also as a person. God blessed Andy, and blessed us through him RIP
