The 1872 Colt Open Top Revolvers were produced simultanneously with the Richards and Richards-Mason Conversion. Between February 1872 until June 1873, a total of 7,000 pieces were produced. This Colt revolver is not a conversion but was produced for metallic cartridfges: the barrel, cylinder and frame were made intentionally, whereas parts such as the grip assembly and the internal components were adapted from the Navy '51 and the Army '60. Production stopped abruptly when the Single Action was introduced.

These are great sixguns! My .44Colt is one of my favorites and rides with me often in an El Paso Saddlery 1849 Californian.

I recomend the 38 man with no name it is a very accurate gun and feels natural shooting from the hip. the 44spl open top is by far my favorite handling gun. maybe i am weird but i perfer the open tops and schofeilds handling over the 1873 saa.

my 38 and 44spl cylinders have had over a thousand of standard pressure ammo through em and still going strong. 45 colt is the only cal i think is not ok for standard loads because the forcing cone is thin for the gas ring? not to sure cause i dont have one but my 44spl is the thinist i would go.

@Odessa45 Yes, black powder .38 SPL is available....but not from the counter top of your gun dealer. You are going to have to shop for it online at cheaperthandirt, cabelas, etc.

@OfCourseImNormal Is the low pressure ammo that this revolver requires commercially available?

i'm actually making a paper mache version of this. The mechanism isn't going to be the same but it'll be modeled after it. Its a .50 cal. i bought a rod at home depo that was actually .54 but it still fit the bill. It may be bigger but its one of my first completed paper macher weapons
