@god11giggs11 Not at all true. Allan knows his music theory quite well, but his understanding of it is a bit different than what is standard. It would be impossible for someone without a sound understanding of theory to play like this.

@vmi3301 there is no predisposition of what guitar (or any instrument) should "sound like"...only opinion or prejudice.

Welcome to the world of guitar
-
this is just it guys.... when you get to be the best you know all the "right" wrong notes to play and when.
-
@vmi3301 Oh the irony!
The fact is, George Benson heard a very young Allan Holdsworth rip holes in the space-time continuum in the 70s whilst playing with Tony Williams' New Lifetime band, and once he picked his jaw from the ground he persuaded CTI management to record this virtuoso.

im not sure that the rest of the band is close to keeping up with allan, hes just beyond them all...when allan had that trio w gary novak and capenter, that was fucking musical paradise
-
@vmi3301 Mr. Benson's got quite a set of ears and I would wager that he has an appreciation and respect for Mr. Holdsworth as well.

@vmi3301 You are a stupid idiot. Is that enough in things insults? Because you behave like one. What's the point in you coming here bashing one of the greatest musicians walking the earth? Tell me what's your point, you goddamn weirdo. Still, I think you got no brains, no attitude, no ears. If you don't get it, if you don't understand Coltrane, go back to your country music or what the heck ever you listen to. AH needs no justification, casting pearls before swines... get lost dude.

@Kuzalias Well played, sir.

@vmi3301 All those guitarists you cite have all praised Holdsworth. Why do they hear something you don't?
Look up George Benson, Take Five. THAT is what guitar is supposed to sound like!

@vmi3301 I tend to find myself disgusted with musicians who are more interested in playing "guitar" than playing music. This is a main difference between a mediocre player and great player. The instrument is simply a tool to reach an ends, NOT THE ENDS IN ITSELF! When you say "this" is how an instrument is "suppose to sound like," I can't help but roll my eyes and die a little inside.

I've been lucky enough to briefly meet Allan on two occasions and both times he was apologetic about his playing, he's never happy with what he's just done. He could have made millions (or at least a helluva lot of money) being someone's sideman chose not to do so, to follow the muse instead. His understanding of music theory/construction is more mystical than concrete, like Joe Zawinul or Miles Davis or John Coltrane; he knows it on a higher level than most mortals ever will. Respect, people.
