AS LONG AS THE BASS NOTE IS C THE CHORD IS A C CHORD. FOCUSING ON THE TOP NOTE WILL ( A CONSONANT TONE) WILL HELP KEEP INTEREST. USING VARIOUS SCALE TONES AND SHAPES UNDER THE TOP CHORD TONE WILL HELP WITH VARIETY. ALSO, IN ALL TIME METERS THE 1 IS THE STRONGEST BEAT SO AS LONG AS TENSIONS ARE RESOLVED ON THE ONE, YOU CAN PLAY ANY COMBO OF 12 TONES BEFOREHAND. (UING GOOD TASTE OF COURSE)

Dizzy was the one who invented it and used to teach it to his students. I'm glad I remembered.

That's amazing... very simple and effective!
Scott, very nice stuff. Mark Harrison, in "Gospel Keyboard Styles" refers to this harmonic device as backcycling, and goes in to great detail from a theory standpoint. Thank you for your very well presented tips!!

Good call ... the term "backcycling" is even more descriptive than what I used. It's funny the "aha" moment I had when I read whatever it was that described it (music theory wise) as I had played using this tip (as have many, many others I've heard over the years) but had never really thought of the theory behind it, which made it explainable ...
