Ramayana Golden Deer

The Ramayana is an Indian epic that's very well known all over Southeast Asia. This is an excerpt from the scene where Shinta was captivated by seeing a golden deer (a demon in disguise) and pleaded Rama to capture it for her. Unlike most of the other dances I've uploaded, it's not from Bali. This dance is from Central Java and belongs to the Wayang Wong genre.

This is the first time I see a video of the Ramayana outside Bali and in Java. Of course, it has the gorgeous sounds of the Javanese gamelan...so magical.

As an Indian I've seen several recitals of the Ramayana, on TV and live, several plays and soap operas that narrate this epic of timeless beauty. But none of them have such elegance and surreal serenity.

I HAVE to visit Indonesia some day! No matter what!
