The Ramayana is an Indian epic that's very well known all over Southeast Asia. This is an excerpt from the scene where Shinta was captivated by seeing a golden deer (a demon in disguise) and pleaded Rama to capture it for her. Unlike most of the other dances I've uploaded, it's not from Bali. This dance is from Central Java and belongs to the Wayang Wong genre.

  • I'm doing a research essay on wayang wong and this was extremely useful (: May I know who the performers are (the name of the dance company), the year this was produced, and the country of production? Thank you so much!

  • Is this twixtored?

  • This is the first time I see a video of the Ramayana outside Bali and in Java. Of course, it has the gorgeous sounds of the Javanese gamelan...so magical.

  • As an Indian I've seen several recitals of the Ramayana, on TV and live, several plays and soap operas that narrate this epic of timeless beauty. But none of them have such elegance and surreal serenity.

I HAVE to visit Indonesia some day! No matter what!

  • The most beautiful traditional art I ever seen, dance and music are fantastique!

  • Wonderful, I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to enjoy this exquisite dance. Great thanks for the upload.

  • @edhaje You are right. The present day Balinese culture, is what Javanese culture used to be.

  • @Sinsupa110 Yes, Java is in Indonesia. It is Javanese Ramayana.
