His Afro = EPIC.

@jeffpete2112 Amazing chops, Jeff! What in unison hands against right foot pattern were you playing from 7:55-8:02? Also, 2112, are you a Rush/Neil Peart fan? Great video. Thanks.

Thanks Jeff, Mucho inspiration, you rock!

@Flexapr I have no idea... some random combination. I am big Rush. Neil has been a big influence on my playing.

@Vicfirth5bb Consider some of the tips below. They should help. One other way to build speed is to work on very small "Moeller type" strokes, but that also follow the "Open-Open-Close-Close" motion. Your ability to restart the mechanics quickly with your wrists have a lot to do with the speed you're able to get with the fingers.
-
@OlTownDrumClinic Practice the motion in unison so the hands are doing the exact same thing, both in feel and visually. Also work on both right and left hand lead. All you can do is practice it slowly to get the motion smooth. Also, consider what JoJo Mayer says.... "You can only play as fast as you can hear". So build up you ability to hear the off beats without the support of the downbeats.
-
how do you build up speed? I can only get each hand to do eighths at 152 BPM.

hey man awesome video, im having alot of trouble syncing my hands and just getting the feel any tips?
awesome playing but i didnt see you apply the open-close to your actual performance . jojo mayer implied the only time he used it was when he needed attention at a music store.

@sticksbass If you look in the right places, you'll see the Open-Close technique all over. You're right that I didn't use the technique I displayed in the first half of the video, the "Open-Close Single Stroke Roll". But I do use the technique in each hand when playing the ride cymbal or ghost notes on the snare drum for example. Pretty much every time two consecutive notes are played with one limb quickly, the Open-Close idea is applied. However, JoJo isn't wrong either.
