I grew up with it along with the progression of death metal, and Kreator was never considered to be death metal. They never considered themselves to be neither, as they called it "Hate Metal". Death, Napalm Death, old Sepultura, old Anathema, old Therion, Cemetery, Obituary, Morbid Angel, etc were death metal, Go youtube-crazy on those bands to hear what death metal sounds like, and you will see (even old) Kreator is not one of them.

@SystematicMechanic Kreator hasn't sounded like death metal at all since Pleasure to Kill, and even at that record, it was only a slight death metal sound, since death metal wasn't really "invented" until 1987 with Death's Scream Bloody Gore. I wouldn't even call Kreator a thrash metal band, since they experimented so much with other styles in the 90s (industrial, groove, and gothic metal).
