No. 12b - Aria

IDOMENEO
Fuor del mar ho un mare in seno,
Che dei primo è più funesto,
E Nettuno ancora in questo
Mai non cessa minacciar.

Fiero Nume! dimmi almeno:
Se al naufragio è sì vicino
Il mio cor, qual rio destino
Or gli vieta il naufragar?

DOMENEO
Saved from the sea, I have a raging sea
more fearsome than before within my bosom,
and Neptune does not cease
his threats even in this.

Stern god! Tell me at least,
if my body was so close to shipwreck,
for what cruel purpose
was that wreck withheld?

  • Boy, it was sure different in the old days. Here we have Agamemnon's daughter about the set off on a trip with the Crown Prince of Crete... and carrying her own rather undistinguished luggage. Take heed Frau Obama.

  • Yeah, it´s great if you can´t sing closed vowels.

  • The translation in english the info box is wrong! It should be: "If my heart (!) is (!) so close to shipwreck, for what cruel purpose is that wreck withheld."

  • I doubt someone who usually sings Turridu could handle the coloratura. But if you can, give it a try.

  • There are a LOT of black notes in this aria! It's pretty amazing how he handles them!
