i thought confrontation was fun but yeah it did have a lot of problems. once you get passed the shit factors it's a solid game. 4 is an improvement though.

I think the reason that the original SOCOMs are so awesome is because of the emphasis on planning and strategy and using team assets over just moving targets down as you blast through a linear map. I personally have not played Confrontation so I can't comment on how much it apparently sucks. But I loved SOCOM 1-3 because of how much time I would spend with maps, terrain, buildings, assets (i.e. weapons and kit of individual team members)--all of that for planning the op. I loved that shit.
