Originally developed by Cadets LaSalle Drumline in 1963, now played by CADRE (Canadian Associates - Drumming Rudimental Excellence), a Toronto-based drum corps organization. Since receiving it, it's become part of my daily warmup and practice routine (thanks to Marc Villenueve of Ottawa for passing it along).

There is an excellent demonstration of this available on YouTube (YT channel: drumdude2008) playing sticks on a practice pad with metronome set at 99 BPM - listed as "Marc Villeneuve; Paradiddle WarmUp." Here, I attempt it also at 99 BPM but with the added technical challenge of traditional wire brushes on the snare drum. Dedicated to Joe Morello.

  • why didn`t you play the paradiddle brushing the doubles or any strokes of the paradiddle...I mean: they are brushes and you`re playing as sticks.

  • I treated it as an exercise, to build chops and develop my stacatto 'tap' sound -- try it, it's a good workout. I like to swing/slide brushes as well, please stay tuned to my YT channel.
