BRAIN POWER: From Neurons to Networks is a 10-minute film and accompanying TED Book (ted.com/tedbooks) from award-winning Director Tiffany Shlain and her team at The Moxie Institute. Based on new research on how to best nurture children's brains from Harvard University's Center on the Developing Child and University of Washington's I-LABS, the film explores the parallels between a child's brain development and the development of the global brain of Internet, offering insights into the best ways to shape both. Made through a new crowd-sourcing creativity process the Moxie team calls "Cloud Filmmaking," Brain Power was created by putting into action the very ideas that the film is exploring: the connections between neurons, networks, and people around the world.

A nice presentation. The central idea is simple and persuasive, the analogy is attractive, and may even have some utility, but the call to action is vague. What specific things can we do (or not do) to guide our own development? What specific lessons from developmental neurobiology apply to the growth of the internet, and how do we make use of them?

To me, it sounds more like a different approach to saying "Don't feed the trolls and be cautious with Facebook and Twitter in the same way you are cautious with candy."
(They're fun in moderation but, just as our brains still assume sugar and salt are rare commodities, our brains are also still wired to assume that there's no such thing as too much gossip and that all gossip helps to strengthen important hunter-gatherer tribal bonds.)

Eleven inspiring minutes to help us understand how the world's brain is being shaped one tweet, one email, one pin, etc. at a time. By paying attention to what we're paying attention to (think about this--mindfulness) we can influence the development of the world's brain as we can the child's, into something remarkable. It's in our hands. THANK YOU, Tiffany Shlain.

Easy there, no need to be violent and use epithets, even if you're right. The point was comparing our brains with a notable technology of our time. We humans need analogies, to relate to things that are beyond our understanding. Not everyone understands the human brain at the point you do, so we have to compare it to something that they're mostly familiar with to make a point. Just remember that there's no perfect analogy, but that doesn't make it any less powerful for the intended target.

If it hadn't been for William Fox suing Thomas Edison over his illegal monopoly and winning, we'd all be watching filmed vaudeville acts instead of movies.
