In light infantry, coaxial, mounted, aircraft, and anti-aircraft machine gun variants, the Browning 1919 was in use in many NATO countries and territories elsewhere for over 80 years. The M1919 Browning .30 caliber medium machine gun was widely used during almost the whole 20th century.
The same 1919 Brownings served duty during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. When it began to be supplanted by later designs in the last half of the 20th century it was rechambered for the sthen state of the art 7.62 × 51 mm NATO round, and served well on into the 1990s. Indeed, the Browning M1919 is still operating in the present day in some smaller countries.
