Wonderful documentary. Even though it is "dated" it is still very informative and quite an eye opener. I always heard about the Radium Girls but the whole picture of the company and the contamination is just shocking.

I found this documentary very worthwhile viewing. In particular, I appreciate the stories about the people involved--that is the heart of Ottawa! It's upsetting how Joe Kelley took advantage of the economy and people's trust and virtue to expose them to such a hazardous situation for simple profit! He has done this same thing in other parts of the country--and how he escaped jail time is baffling. The hazards of radium were understood by scientists since Marie Curie's work and eventual death.

Hi, Kurt- the orange Fiesta Ware... :) Our company is in Fitzwilliam NH, which was once the largest granite quarry in the Granite State (the NYC Public Library lions were carved from blocks quarried here) - there's tons of radon in everyone's basements.

If you do, you'll find it an interesting hobby. Today, granite countertops are often (slightly) radioactive, and many older alarm clocks were painted with radium dials. The radiation isn't a danger, unless you open up the clock and ingest bits of radium paint. A lot of depression-era glass and pottery was also made using uranium for coloration.

The WORST. The company should have taken responsibility and made a rational effort to compensate their workers... to be fair, no one really had factual data on the dangers of radioactivity until after World War Two... but the Federal Government indemnified the US Radium Company in order to protect its source of material for building nuclear weapons...
