South Korean President Lee Myung-bak had tough words for North Korea on Thursday. During a visit to a military outfit, he vowed a counterstrike against the communist North if South Korea is attacked again.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak used tough rhetoric and vowed a counterstrike against North Korea during a visit to a military dear the Demilitarized zone on Thursday.

[Lee Myung-bak, South Korean President]:
"Our military should maintain an iron-tough defense posture to protect our territory. And we should launch a merciless counterattack if our territory is attacked."

A South Korean analyst says President Lee's recent tactics rely less and less on dialogue.

[Yang Moo-jin, Professor, University of North Korean Studies]:
"The policy of the Lee Myung-bak government against North Korea is to manage the situation on the Korean peninsula and to lead the North to change through strengthened military deterrence, not through dialogue. So tensions on the peninsula will be raised with both Koreas maintaining strong measures."

South Korea held a major land drill on Thursday between Seoul and the heavily armed Demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas. It also continued naval live-fire exercises 60 miles south of the maritime border with North Korea.

The drill involved a larger scale of firepower and personnel than usual for an exercise at the army training ground. It's an indication that President Lee wants to show the public Seoul can stand up to the North.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been raised since North Korea fired artillery shells at a South Korean island in November, killing four people including two civilians.

In March, North Korea torpedoed a South Korean Navy ship and killed 46 sailors at the Yellow Sea.

The two Koreas are technically still at war and station about one million troops near their respective sides of the DMZ since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce without a peace treaty.

  • @AllstarHunE Turns out all that blather between NK and SK was to fool the Japanese into signing another deal with us military ... they had wanted to kick them out ... once Hilary got the Japanese to sign on the dotted line ... by magic its gone quiet between north and south. It's a game of joint the dots. Thanks for the reply.

  • @daviddalbylive

that's not even the right stereotype. And leave NK alone? they're the one sinking a warship and firing long range missiles on korean territories.

  • I know.....drop a great big nuke right on the border

  • there's no war win chinese people ... there's no so bad to win a war !!!

  • @jadeyes914 for reals, im ready to see action.

  • War mongering South Koreans have a death wish. They should go back to playing on there Nintendo's and mobile phones and leave the NK alone.

  • @inthewerks i don't really see anyone on north korea side except maybe china, who gets nothing from north korea and values stability above all... so if war really were to break out they would probably side with the usa. haven't you seen the wikileaks? even chinese are saying they wouldn't mind a reunified korea with a south korean government with a benign alliance with the usa.

even their former ally, russia, wants nothing to do with them. north korea is cornered.

  • It seems like the truce keeps getting thinner and thinner. There are alot of other countries involved and taking sides with the North and the South so the situation could get real bad real fast for more countries than Korea. This is a very hot spot right now and I hope tentions can be eased between the two.

  • i've been waiting for the shit to hit the fan for about a month now. are they going to do anything or what?

  • Watching and waiting.....
