On the small island of Moloka'i you can ride mules down the face of the highest sea cliffs in the world. The narrow trail in places makes for some unnerving times for those afraid of heights. And with the mules' tendency to walk out towards the edge of the trail, it can get even worse if you decide to look down.

Being the good guy that I am, I have done it for you! Just watch this video. The first view down the mountain to the ocean is from about 1,600 feet of elevation. IT'S A VIEW TO REMEMBER!

I had asked our guide if a mule has ever fallen over the edge. His reply was not the least bit reassuring. He simply said, "No, not YET!"

The trail's end is on the Kalaupapa Peninsula. This was the dying place for hundreds of people from around the islands who were infected with Hansen's Disease (leprosy). They were abandoned and left to die here during the 1800's and early 1900's.

  • Is this something you would recommend for visitors? I'll be going there in May.

  • @TheDiamondWoman1,

I would say that as a visitor myself and the fact that this ride was the single reason we went to this island the first time, YES!

  • Beautiful video. Currently the mule ride trail is closed due to recent storm. We are hoping that it will open back up in December when we will be in Hawaii. It looks a bit scary but what an unbelievable experience!!

  • @Lilbrowngal,

Actually, it was landslide a few months ago that took out a large section of the trail. The National Park Service keeps saying "in a couple months" it shall be completed. They have been working on a bridge to span the gap, but it has proven to be more difficult than anticipated.

Molokai Mule Ride is on the verge of collapse since they have been unable to make the tours. Let's all hope it works out.

  • I hiked the trail. never done anything like it in my life. at 59 years old I can say I'm in good shape...LOL

  • I told my friends that I don't want to just fly into the settlement. We either hike it down or mule it down but not just fly into it because we will miss the beautiful scenery that we all have have seen on your video.... and of course the experience, too. I emailed the video to my friends and they are all excited to do this! So thank you for posting this video. Awesome!!

  • Oh Yes. It was a mudslide. I called the Park Service, they too are not sure when it will be opening. They have an October date to start and then 4-6 weeks of fixing it. But I spoke to another tour representative and he said they keep pushing it back.... The Muleride Tour posted a picture of a broken trail... looks difficult but we are crossing are fingers that it will be repaired. Otherwise, we will be going to Hilo and see the volcano park....

  • beautiful... I know the mule ride is closed now due to damages of a recent storm.... looks pretty steep but what an experience!

  • Rode my mule "Laka" down that adventure. Thanks for sharing...it's been over twenty years when I had the guts to do this! Glad I did it.

  • This was supposed to be one of the highlights of our upcoming Hawai trip....until I found out that we wouldn't be able to take our under-16 kids along!! BUMMER!!
