  • Is there some kind of rule that boys study yari and girls study naginata?

  • @belisariusorb Im far to call myself expert but I heard that too- that naginata is a weapon that moastly woman used- to defend while men were on battle. At least thats how it was historically ;)

  • @Mesqualito Myth. It's a battlefield weapon. Although, in the 20th century women have been active in it.

  • @belisariusorb Not that I know of....maybe. I doubt it.

  • as best I understand, the yari was a good fronline weapon, the naginata was more suited to guarding the rear of an army. given it's defensive nature, it was taught to women, who would have to stay at home, to guard the house against invaders should the men-folk be away at war.

I believe either Diane Skoss or Ellis Amdur wrote some about this. Check out Koryu.com

  • @mekugi oh-sorry for posting incorrect information- and thanks for making it straight. My poor knowledge didnt blink as supposed ;-)

  • I LOVE naginata. It's my favorite of all the Japanese martial weapons. The ultimate in grace and fluidity.
