Real people ARE judged by their actions and Sam should be judged by hers as well... and in my book, a hero isn't someone who puts a baby in harm's way more than once. One good deed does not erase all her bad ones!
As far as the "badass" label... that's laughable! Sam has needed to be rescued three times in the last month and I hear she will need to be rescued again soon. And people say Liz is a damsel in distress... PFFT! She has nothing on Sam's damsel in distress record!

Sam's character is flawed like alot of real people. If real people were judged by their mistakes, then we would all be screwed. The reason why the character is so well received is because along with scamming men for money in her past, she'll go into a warehouse and save a baby. A baby, by the way, that came as a result of her boyfriend knocking up the mother. And by the way, this ain't the first time she stepped up to do something heroic. The chick is a badass (loose morals? maybe but a bad ass)
