July 1976 Boy Scout Troop 506 (La Jolla California) week-long backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada. Hike originated in Mineral King, to Sawtooth Pass over the Great Western Divide, into the basin of Big Five Lakes, Little Five Lakes, and back west to Columbine Lake, returning to our starting point. The adult leaders are Paul Vellum and Mr. John Gilliland. I was age 12 when I shot this 11-1/2 minute Super 8 film. It was recorded on videotape from a projection on a screen in 1987 (shortened slightly to fit YouTube).

  • As a current member of Troop 506, I find this video extremely interesting. Everything else in the world has changed so much in the last 35 years, but the great outdoors has changed very little. I love it. See you on the next river trip, Mr. Bloom. By the way, who was scoutmaster at the time that this was taken? Thanks.

  • La Jolla? Im from troop 713 in Del Mar!

  • I first went to Mineral Kings in 1983. You have some good shoots from Sawtooth pass. I hope some of the young and old ones still go.
