OVER two thousand pounds was raised donations went under the hammer at a charity auction at the Uplowman Village Hall.
The auction on July 18 raised £2,147 for Age Concern, and saw seventy lots being sold including a Virgin hot air balloon ride worth £400 going for £250, and one week in a Spanish villa being sold for £150.
Debbie Westlake from Age Concern said: "We're going to use the money towards developing out day services at our two day centres. The older people will be able to make friendships and take part in more activities there.
"We've had a good team of 20 people helping, from selling tickets, making food, and decorating the hall."
Tiverton based auctioneer Chilcotts dealt with the bidding, with Duncan Chilcott taking the bids. He said: "It's been great fun, some lovely things to sell, and nice people to sell them to. It was much more light hearted than other auctions, and there was lots of banter and jokes between me and the people in the room, whereas in an auction of antiques or fine art things are a little bit more serious.
"Charities have to find money from so many different venues, be it auctions, raffles or sponsored walks - every little helps as they say."
Michelle Lane's successful bid of £150 got her and her husband a will donated by Ashford's Solicitors. She paid said: "It feels good to be a winning bidder. I'm happy with my win, and of course it's going to a good cause as a will be useful in the long run.
"Death comes eventually, but we've thinking about it for a while, and thought while we're here, we may as well get it sorted."
There was also a Glory of Amlwych plant which was snapped up by Louise Maunder. She added: "We've got a garden that's just been landscaped and this plant will help fill it.
"I thought the auctioneer was excellent because he made the atmosphere light and enjoyable and everybody joined into the spirit which makes an occasion of it."
