The rules are pretty clear - ALL Vocals have to be sung live! - However if they are sung through a machine to add "effects" that is OK as well.
So-Called "Taped" Music was started back in the late 70's

That's so 1970's!

From 2:25 the Eurovision is summed up.

@gyorkepark Well, they married a couple of years later, and YES, they're still wearing those outfits. ;-)

I`m kind of stunned. I thought Eurovision always had forced the use of playback when performing. But in 1973 it seems that they actually had a orchestra..
Does anyone know when they started with the "playback thing" in the Eurovision contest?

@Legenden0 They don't playback at all. The music is on a tape these days but the vocals HAVE to be done live. The orchestral accompaniment stopped in the middle 90's when they switched to taped music but the vocals are always live.
There have been cases of intries having been penalised because of the merest hint of vocals on the music tape.

@RabbiF I stand corrected, they are using "singback" these days. I checked it and you were right, the vocals have to be done "live".
Now I`m wondering if there are any clear definition on what a "live" vocal is in this contest? I mean like, can they use "Vocal Enhancers" to add echo, reverb and other effects to their voices? Just curious as some of the performances I`ve seen earlier makes me ponder.

@Legenden0 I am not sure what the policy is on enhancers. I'd assume that as long as it is performed live, reverb, echo and such are allowed. But again, i am not sure on that.
