A Shinkansen bullet train passing through the station at the seaside town of Atami at night. These trains are a piece to ride and neat to watch zoom through the stations.
We visited Atami on a lark -- we had been in the Hakone area all day and we were heading back to our hotel in Tokyo but since we had a 7-day rail pass and the evening was young we thought we'd take the train the other way one stop and just explore. We were in for a treat! The beach is about a 10 minute walk from the station and we found a nice local place to eat overlooking the water just after sunset. Along the beach front, there are interesting pieces of public are which seem to glow. The way down to the beach is a bit steep so we took a train back up to the station so we wouldn't miss our train. The rail passes are for foreign visitors -- buy them before you travel to Japan -- you can't buy 'em once you get there.
UPDATE: The title for this video used to say the train traveled at "full speed". I estimate the speed to be about 120mph based on my observation in the original video that the train travels the distance of 3 ties in one frame, and the video has 30 frames per second. I used google earth to measure the distance of three ties in Japan (1.8m). That works out to be 194kph or about 120mph. Still seems fast when you're standing in the station! We rode several trains on the Shinkansen, and at least sometimes they don't seem to slow down in the smaller stations.
I was at Himeji station when several train went through, a lot faster than this. The whole station shakes as it's built on a metal frame!

The speed is impressive, but I expected that, given they're nicknamed "bullet" trains and all. What was really impressive to me is the frequency of the trains. Two tracks, one for each direction, and the trains arrive only a few minutes apart. That's impressive at slower speeds, but just amazing at these speeds. The wide angle of this video also tends to give the impression that the train is moving slower than it actually is.
