In the last decade, the United States has experienced a series of man-made and natural disasters. Large numbers of people in this country have been exposed to potentially traumatic events. This video focuses on NIMH research in the areas of traumatic stress reactions and specifically mental health issues among U.S. service members. What we learn from the military experience can help us understand stress risk predictions for the entire population.

  • Why was the NIMH engaged in an unethical research study with Eli Lilly where psychotic depression patients were denied antidepressant and antipsychotics for their treatment? Some patients were denied any active medication other than Ativan. The Boston Globe investigated the unethical nature of the research and the study was stopped. One female patient was forced into the study despite not meeting the diagnostic criteria or the safety requirements, and was denied appropriate care for a month.
