Hermione has always had a crush on Severus and he is aware of this fact, though he does nothing about it. She is constantly haunted by thoughts of him and cannot let go of her dream that maybe one day she'll be with him.
One day, at the end of a Potions lesson, Severus asks her to see him in his office that evening. Hermione is perplexed but does so. When she gets there she realises that he wishes to start a relationship with her, though he still has no feelings for her, he is merely making the most of the situation. Hermione though is delighted and their secret relationship begins.
Severus is content whilst he knows that he does not actually like her, but one day at dinner he suddenly 'sees' Hermione for the first time and realises that he has grown attached. Shocked by this revelation he decides to cruelly end their relationship.
Hermione is left distraught and Severus is also extremely upset, missing her greatly.
Then one day he turns up at the Gyffindor Common Room to see Hermione and ask if they can make it work again.
