In 1767 Ayutthaya was destroyed by the Burmese army, resulting in the collapse of the kingdom. The ruins of the old city now form the Ayutthaya historical park, which is recognized internationally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was refounded a few kilometers to the east.
You can visit Ayutthaya on a day trip from Bangkok, or you can stay over night like we did and self tour on rented bicycles. We rented our bikes from the local police station for about $2
