Schumann Etudes Symphoniques Op. 13 Theme, Etudes 1, 2, and 3.
This is one of the few instances where Rubinstein allowed a recorded concert performabce to be released. The Schumann was recorded during one of the 10 Carnegie Hall recitals that Rubinstein decided to give over a period of twenty four days during the 1961 season. Excluding encores, none of the compositions that he played during this series was repeated. Rubinstein gave all the proceeds from the recitals to charity. Rubinstein's decision to give these ten recitals was prompted by an event that had occurred during the previous season. That year (1960), Sal Hurok finally succeeded in bringing Svyatoslav Richter, who until then had not been allowed to travel abroad, to America. Richter gave six sold out recitals in New York. Rubinstein writes, "Here I would like to confess a not too nice side of my character. With all my admiration for Richter, I was not a little vexed by Hurok's too great enthusiasm for his six concerts with some repeated programs and the readiness of New Yorkers to adopt him at his first appearance."
All of these ten historic recitals were recorded, but Rubinstein only allowed a few of the compositions that he performed to be issued because, he writes, "I was afraid in the rest of the programs there were too many wrong notes; I had played freely, as in the old days, giving all my heart and not caring much for these little incidents, This time, even the severe American critic-detectives didnt take any notice of it."

  • Get Rubenstein out of the studio and this is the type of thing that could happen. Musicmaking of rapturous abandon.

  • There are many renditions of this wonderful Schumann work by a number of very capable virtuoso pianists, but few that really do it justice. This one is way up there. Indeed the only other that rivals it is Cherassky´s, also a live one. imho.

  • Che musica.. sublime, amatissimo , immenso schumann............

  • What a fresh interpretation!

  • This simply touches the soul on so many levels.

  • This has a sobering effect that I've been in need of. Thank you.

  • God Schumann had a fucked up life!

  • The first edition is the one to use.

  • yes yes!!! where's the rest? i love it. please please please post the rest
