god i wish i found this and "boundaries" when i was 16, i went on a martyr mission and literally "went where I was needed", be it a 4am desperate bang on the door crying endlessly for hours hearing ppls pain, id skip work and class if someone needed a shoulder to cry on and felt that was always more important and had terrible guilt if i couldnt be available to them. it got me a stalker turned rapist, ptsd & depression. nice one. now i look back thankful for the exp. but boundaries are crucial!!!

@BleednEden Yes, martyrism is one of the ego's favorite tricks because it's so covert...keeping us miserable under the guise of "being a good person." It sounds like that time in your life was really intense and stressful.

@UnificationDotCom stressful to say the least; ) I know now about the egos role in martyrdom, the self deprecating aspects & all, but the fact that its so exalted in our society like mother Teresa for example, known for her "selfless" altruism; would you say thats just her ego taking over & not having boundaries? and if so, is there something "wrong" with that? Some people pay off guilt or unworthiness with donations or heroicism, so whats more important to you- the cause or the effect? thanks!

@BleednEden Yes, it sounds like "stressful" wasn't a strong enough word. Intensely traumatizing may be a better phrase. I've also thought about Mother Teresa. There was a time when I thought that was the "best" thing we could do...but I realized that we all have our place. In the book "The Highly Sensitive Person", Aron suggests that HSPs may not want to be on the "front lines." Everyone has something they came here to do, and we have to quiet our mind, tune in, and discover it!
