she's actually doing it wrong. As a 4 year respiratory therapist, I don't recommend exhaling out all the way before taking a deep breath in. Exhaling normally (passively) and then inhaling deep allows you to take a deeper breathe in.
When they want to measure your total lung capacity during a PFT, the RT will tell u to breathe our normally and then take a breath in as deep as you can. Same concept as taking an inhaler.
