J. Harvie Wilkinson III, a University of Virginia Law School graduate who serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth District, delivers the 2009 U.Va. Finals address. Wilkinson, whose name has circulated on short lists for U.S. Supreme Court vacancies, challenged political proposals seeking to broaden the proportion of in-state students at the University, which would reduce out-of-state and international enrollment. He says the greatness of U.Va. depends not only on attracting marvelous students from Virginia, but also the best students from throughout the U.S. and around the world. He says ensuring such diversity is in keeping with University of Virginia founder Thomas Jefferson's vision for the school.
