From the Desk of Alessio Cavatore:
With the latest version of Warhammer 40,000 there are several new and exciting rules changes that should immediately enhance your games of Apocalypse. The ability to run is a huge boost to your footslogging troops that might otherwise get left behind, struggling to get into range as they trudge across a large Apocalypse sized battlefield. Blast weapons also get a large advantage in Apocalypse games; as long as you target a high concentration of enemy troops you're bound to hit something, even if the template scatters.
Perhaps the biggest rule change that might affect your games of Apocalypse, and one that is worth discussing a little further, is what counts as a scoring unit -- something that has changed in the new edition of Warhammer 40,000. Only Troops choices count as scoring units now, which means that only they may control an objective, although any unit may contest it. This new ruling plays fantastically in its own right, but doesn't sit perfectly with the wording in the Apocalypse book, which states that only scoring units may contest an objective. This was originally intended to keep things like immobilised vehicles from contesting objectives, but now it means that objectives are may not be contested by elite Terminators or even Warhound Titans. It is possible to play in this manner, but wasn't the intent we were after. So what to do?
There are countless ways to interpret this rules change to the scoring unit definition and there is no single right answer, the only really important thing is to ensure that everybody knows which method you are using for any particular battle from the start.
As written in the new Warhammer 40,000 rulebook:The first option is simply to use the new edition of the rules to determine who controls an objective. So only Troops choices count as scoring units and any unit may deny or contest an objective. This is simple enough, but keep in mind the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook says that models must be within 3" to control or contest an objective.
Any models can control or contest objectives:Another option is to say that everything counts as a scoring unit, unless it is below half strength, is falling back, is an immobilised vehicle, or is an independent character -- this is essentially the system used at the time Apocalypse was published. To control or contest, a model must be within 6" of an objective.
