  • What do you mean the Bears got lucky your an idiot man Miami would have lost to the Bears

  • The Bears got lucky in 1985 by not having to play the Dolphins in the Super Bowl and getting one of the worst Super Bowl opponents ever in the 1985 Pats.

  • thanks for posting all these. I love vintage bears videos.

  • Exactly re: the defense. They had better stats in 86, but in 85 they intimidated people, controlling the games mentally.

  • I remember watching some of this game in my dormitory room and thinking "Whoa, the defending champ Giants are getting their asses stomped." Wow, that's been 22 years ago!

  • and the funny thing is that our defense reached close to the dominance of 85 in 05, but lacked at QB again

  • Also, not having Leslie Frasier in 1986 hurt. He was perhaps the most underrated Bears defensive player. The team choked their asses off the next 3 years in the playoffs due to defensive lapses in the secondary, injuries, and certainly poor Quarterback play. McMahon was made of porcelin, Tomczak was inconsistent, Flutie was young and green, Harbaugh was average, and Steve Fuller was nothing but an OK backup. Plus, the offensive scheme was predictable. The defense was most dominant in 84 and 85.

  • Wrong, free agency hurt the Bears when their 2-time all-pro Wilber Marshall left for the Redskins in 1988 and their deep threat Willie Gault left for the Raiders. The Bears got draft pick compensation, which they fucked up by shitty picks. The 1986 defense was better statistically than the 85 defense, but that don't mean shit. The 46 defense was complex and unique. Vince Tobin's zone blitz scheme was crap. The Bears had unbelievable talent on defense and that';s why they were able to play well.

  • First, free agency didn't come to the nfl til 93. 2nd, laziness and ego are 2 different things (I grant you complacency, which is hard to fight with any championship club). 3rd, the defense in 86 (after Ryan left) was better than the defense in 85 (check the stats). The dark ages offense with the revolving door of qbs just couldn't take advantage of it.

  • Egos had a lot to do with it. When the Bears won the Super Bowl, they were the youngest team in the NFL. They had more talent position for position than anyone in football. They got complacent and let the fame go to their heads. The Fridge came into came in 86 overweight. McMahon came in out of shape and over weight. The reasons the Bears downfall occurred was instabillty at the QB position, the loss of Buddy Ryan, the loss of free agent players, complacency, and egos, especially Ditka.
