If you live near water, you may have heard the term harmful algal bloom. HABs, as theyre called, are caused by a small group of micro-organisms that grow rapidly under certain environmental conditions.

  • are algal bloom a red algae?

  • Algal blooms are often green, but they can also be other colors, depending on the algae species. Harmful algal blooms that involve toxic or harmful phytoplankton (including genus Alexandrium and Karenia) often take on a red or brown hue and are known as "red tides."
