A mixed media tutorial on Demented Gold Leaf by Darlene Olivia McElroy.

"I'm a person for the imperfect so I'm not looking for perfection. I'm looking for the happy accident... What you get after you rub off the excess gold leaf is a Demented Gold Leaf abstract pattern".

What you will need:
Protective surface such as newspaper
Spray Glue
Gold Leaf
Masking Tape
Pattern with holes in it such as a doily
Substrate
Metal Leaf Sealer or Polymer Medium
Paint Brush

Santa Fe Workshops
I offer small (5-6 people) workshops in my Santa Fe studio six or more times a year upon request. I also will work one-on-one if that works better for you.

Classes
My ten week mixed media class at Valdes Art Supplies in Santa Fe, NM starts in the beginning of October. I teach fall, winter and spring classes there. We cover surfaces, image transfers, demented gold leaf, aging, finishes and ephemera resources. The class is a great deal of fun and there is a great deal of sharing.

Demos
Several times a year, I give demos on both image transfers and surfaces at Artisan's in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. Check Artisan's web site for demos and classes by many artists.

  • Great video and explanations. Demented? No way! Expensive Maybe if it is real gold.

Artistic, fun and beautiful, for sure!

I would like to try some free hand designs on oil paintings, have you any suggestions on how to apply it????

  • You could brush adhesive size for gold leaf free form. You can even spray it on by dipping a toothbrush in the size and spraying. This winter I will be putting up 2 more videos of demented gold leaf up.

  • Very cool...please post more videos!

  • Hi Miss Jenibee

Look for more videos this winter on more demented gold leaf techniques and image transfers.

  • Nice tutorial! Actually, I used a UV protective acrylic topcoat and the leaf has not tarnished at all. I completed the painting almost a year ago. You can see it on the first page of my gallery website if you like. I like the way it came out. :>

  • Super. Thanks

  • this was a fabulous new technique I wasn't aware of yet. More $ out the door for more materials. Thanks for this great idea.
