That's only half true, it definitely helps if you already mastered the guitar speed-wise, and to some extent of course it pays to already be used to stretching your fingers, but technique on a bouzouki is significantly different - I would go as far as to say it takes a complete different way of thinking: not in scales, but modes. In that respect, it's much closer to flamenco guitar. Of course, it does give you a bit of a headstart.

@zePippin I never played one, but it's no different than playing a regular guitar technique wise. Really, once you mastered any instrument in the guitar and lute families, you should be able to transition between different instruments easily, just like how people who play woodwinds can go from flute to saxophone. The only hard part would be learning the different scales and styles of playing for these instruments, which is all memorization.
